“It is with heavy hearts that we, at the University of Ottawa, learned of the passing of trailblazer Monique Bégin.
In both Canadian public life and academia, she was a giant: a passionate parliamentarian, a provocative scholar and a fearless advocate.
She was a dear friend and inspiration to many of us at the University of Ottawa, an institution that she fought to strengthen, and which benefitted greatly from her drive and talent.
Always breaking new ground even after leaving public life, she was first joint uOttawa-Carleton Chair of Women's Studies. In 1990, she was named Dean of our new Faculty of Health Sciences, setting it on a brilliant course that will soon begin a new chapter in an innovative new home.
As a professor emeritus following her retirement, she continued to call uOttawa home where she used her passionate voice to advocate for a more just, healthy, and equitable society.
We share our condolences with her family as well as her friends and colleagues in our University community.”
