Nutrition Sciences
The Honours Bachelor's in Nutrition Sciences at uOttawa's Faculty of Health Sciences is the only program of its kind in Ontario to be taught in French. The program, which runs just over four years including internships, provides a stimulating learning environment driven by a team of dynamic professors actively engaged in research.
The curriculum involves four general courses in psychology and communication, basic-science courses (anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, bacteriology and immunology) and nutrition-specific courses (food science, food-service management, community nutrition, clinical nutrition, nutrition assessment, nutrition research, nutrition throughout life, nutrition and metabolism, etc.).
Internships can take place in a number of settings, such as hospitals, community health centres, Health Canada, fitness centres, private clinics, agri-food companies and food-service providers. The program is now undergoing the Dieticians of Canada accreditation process. Upon receiving their diploma, graduates can write the national accreditation exam.
Career options abound. Dieticians can work in hospitals as clinical dieticians or as managers of food services. Graduates can also join community agencies like public health organizations, home-care services and long-term-care facilities. Finally, more and more dieticians are entering non-traditional sectors (food industries, media and communications, sport nutrition, sales and administration, educational institutions).
