Canadian Studies

The concentration program in Canadian studies is open to all students interested in Canadian history, culture and society. It is designed for those who plan to work in either the public or private sectors in a career that calls for an understanding of the Canadian context.

One key feature of the concentration program in Canadian studies is its interdisciplinary nature. The program is structured in such a way that, from the outset, students examine the Canadian reality using several different disciplinary approaches: history, geography, literature, sociology, political science and economics. Once this foundation is in place, students are free to complete the number of credits required by choosing courses from among those listed in the area of Canadian studies by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The unique feature of this program is that, within the context of bilingual and bicultural studies, it offers students an opportunity to take courses in both English and French. Thus allowing students to achieve not only a high level of active bilingualism, but also, by virtue of this knowledge of both languages, a deeper understanding of the country’s two main cultures. All students enrolled in this program must take at least 12 of the 36 credits that make up the program in their second official language (English or French).
