Second Language Teaching

Second language teaching is a dynamic field, with tremendous potential in an age of shrinking borders, Internet communications and other advances in technology. Those who know additional languages have a distinct advantage in the global marketplace and in worldwide travel. Consequently, there is a high demand for teachers specialized in second language teaching.

The University of Ottawa is well known for its excellence in second language teaching. Its second language teaching program is commonly referred to by its French Acronym DLS (Didactique des langues secondes. The program is jointly sponsored by the faculties of Arts and Education, and is the only undergraduate program of its kind in Canada to offer teaching in both French and English. As well as preparing students for a career in second language teaching, the program also leads to language-related careers in such fields as translation, writing and editing.

Students take courses in the theory and practice of second language teaching, linguistics and the language they hope to teach. The program draws on professors who teach in other programs (BEd, MEd, MA and PhD) and are recognized nationally for their expertise in the field of second language teaching. All this takes place in the heart of Canada’s capital, on the largest bilingual campus in North America.

Programs

Three-year concentration and four-year honours programs lead to a baccalaureat in arts in second language teaching. A unique feature of this program is its interdisciplinary component. From the first year, students study second language teaching within the disciplines of language, literature, linguistics, psychology and education.

The baccalaureat in arts in second language teaching equips future teachers with the following:

1) a solid background in the language they will teach, how that language is used and the culture it reflects;
2) a sound knowledge of the conditions and processes that foster language learning; and
3) an awareness of the many ways in which one can teach the language.

The program prepares professional second language teachers: specialists who know what they are doing, why they are doing it and consequently work enthusiastically and effectively.

The program can be combined with another concentration or honours program in a different area (for example, a baccalaureate in arts with a concentration in linguistics and a concentration in second language teaching, or a baccalaureate in arts with honours in second language teaching and a concentration in psychology) .

Although some courses focus primarily on the teaching of English or French as second languages, this program will also appeal to those interested in teaching other languages, since the basic principles are the same.

After completing the baccalaureate in arts in second language teaching, students can apply for admission to the Faculty of Education in order to obtain an Ontario Teacher’s Certificate (OTC). It is important to note that an OTC is accepted in other provinces; however, students should apprise themselves of the appropriate certification procedures. Students enrolled in the baccalaureate in second language teaching can also ask for conditional admission and reserve their place at the Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa (if they meet certain requirements). Students can return to their home province to obtain a baccalaureate in education and thus qualify for certification in that province.

The University of Ottawa also offers a master’s in education, a master’s of arts and a doctorate program in second language teaching, as well as professional development programs for teachers (additional qualifications and additional basic qualifications courses). The baccalaureate program is excellent preparation for any of these programs.

Job Opportunities

Job prospects for graduates continue to be very good and will most likely improve in the future. More qualified basic French and English teachers are needed, The majority of Canadian children take courses in one of Canada’s official languages. French immersion teachers are also in demand because of the increasing popularity of French immersion programs across Canada. Furthermore, the influx of immigrants who need instruction in either English or French and the demand for higher skills acquired through adult education also provide opportunities for well-trained teachers.

Admission to the BA

Students may be admitted to the BA with concentration or honours in second language teaching from the first
year of their program.

Conditional admission to the BEd

Students registered in the BA with concentration or honours in second language teaching may apply for conditional admission to a second language teaching program offered by the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa (BEd).

Conditional admission to the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa (BEd) is possible once students have successfully completed a minimum of 24 credits towards the BA with concentration or honours in second language teaching including the courses DLS1100/1101/1500/1501 and LIN1101/1501. All courses must be passed with a minimum mark of B. The conditional admission would be during the second last year of your program.

Students will be considered for admission if they comply with the following procedures and requirements.

Students wishing to teach English (advanced English for francophones) in the French language schools of Ontario must apply to the French sector of the Faculty of Education (Formation à l'enseignement). The English sector (Teacher Education) does not offer the option English as a second language (for those wishing to teach in the English language schools of Ontario). ESL qualifications can only be obtained after the BEd degree, through a series of additional qualification courses.

Those wishing to teach French as a second language at the primary/junior and the junior/intermediate levels must apply to the English sector of the Faculty of Education (Teacher Education). Those wishing to teach French as a second language at the intermediate/senior level can apply to the French sector of the Faculty of Education (Formation à l'enseignement) or the English sector (Teacher Education).

Candidates must meet the following conditions:

- at the time of admission have a cumulative grade point average of 6.0 (B);
- pass in due course the language competency test (or tests) of the Faculty of Education;
- receive a favourable recommendation from the BEd admissions committee.

Throughout their studies, candidates must meet the following conditions:
- maintain a cumulative grade point average of 6.0 (B);
- obtain a sufficient number of credits in one or more subjects taught in the schools to obtain the prerequisites necessary for teaching the said subjects;
- acquire relevant experience.
