Medieval Studies
An interdisciplinary concentration in medieval studies is offered with the co-operation of several departments of the Faculty of Arts and Saint Paul University. Courses may also be taken at Carleton University.
The concentration in medieval studies seeks essentially to bring together a number of disciplines related to the culture and civilization of the middle ages (history, linguistics, philology, music, philosophy, classics, vernacular literary studies), now more or less isolated in the various departments of the faculty, so that students may explore and come to appreciate the value of an interdisciplinary approach to the humanities.
European nations and those of America to which they gave rise are the offspring of the rich and complex medieval civilization, whose legacy comprises, in part, castles, cathedrals and cities, as well as troubadour lyricpoetry, polyphonic music, illuminated manuscripts, and the Arthurian romances, with their accounts of the illustrious Knights of the Round Table.
By focusing on the links uniting these various cultural elements, the medieval studies program seeks to foster a multidisciplinary perspective essential today both in teaching and research, and in fields such as library and archival science.
The program finds a natural extension in the biennial Days of Medieval Studies held in the spring and the University of Ottawa Medieval Texts and Studies collection founded in 1973.
Combined with an honours program in one of the disciplines offered by the University, the concentration program in medieval studies provides excellent preparation for graduate studies in one of the fields for which it has served as an introduction.
