Details

On September 30, Canadians from coast to coast will gather on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to recognize and honour Indigenous peoples. We will collectively acknowledge the tragic legacy of residential schools.

Established in 2021, the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation builds on Orange Shirt Day, which began in 2013 to raise awareness about residential schools and their impact on Indigenous peoples. The dedication of this day is a response to Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s final report which called for the recognition of the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada.

As we reflect on this day, it is important to recognize the specific language and history tied to Indigenous issues. This day is not only about acknowledgment but also about ensuring that Indigenous voices and concerns remain central in all acts of commemoration.

Please join us on Monday, September 30, 2024, in University Square at 9:30 a.m. to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The ceremony will be followed by a community feast in FSS 4007.
