The New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) aims to support groundbreaking, transformative, high-impact and interdisciplinary Canadian-led research. The fund is administered by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS), part of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The NFRF has three funding streams: exploration, transformation, and international.
Professor Thomas Uchida is an award recipient of the 2023 Exploration Competition. The Exploration stream promotes high-risk and high-impact research across disciplines. It encourages collaborations that challenge conventional approaches, empowering teams to push boundaries and explore the unknown.
Dr. Uchida's research proposes a novel, non-invasive treatment for Parkinson’s Disease which uses a glove built to deliver vibrotactile stimulation targeting the patients’ peripheral nerves. This approach is cost-effective and can improve the lives of millions of people currently undergoing ineffective or unaffordable treatment.
Professor Uchida is one of five University of Ottawa professors awarded funding from the New Frontiers in Research Fund. All five researchers have received a combined $1.25 million to support innovative, interdisciplinary research spanning from sustainable plastics to the connection between epilepsy and biodiversity.
Congratulations to our very own Professor Uchida!
